“Covenant” = from Assyrian/Semitic words meaning “to bind”/fetter - involved “curses” (spoken or unspoken) if a covenant were broken - throughout history, it has involved: …the drinking of each other’s blood …sprinkling blood (Ex 24) …monuments/alters were built to remember …a handshake …a written, formal agreement …between nations …meal together (Gen 31) …Ab and God – cutting animals, walking between (Gen 15) š Arab expression – “there is salt between us”
* God is committing / binding Himself to us! Think about that! EX – man committing to ROBOTS?!?! * A covenant with God never ends – because of God’s choosing. * What good reason do we have to mistrust the legitimacy, superiority of making a covenant with God?
Altar – place of worship, showing honor š 12 stones – 12 tribes – elders from each tribe were present
Ps 50:5 – sacrifice is required for a covenant to be made - blood "Gather to Me My consecrated ones, who made a covenant with Me by sacrifice."
“We Bring the Sacrifice of Praise” - what do we sacrifice? …Romans 12:1 – living sacrifices! “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.”
Moses tells the people all the words of the law, the ordinances …so the people wouldn’t covenant out of ignorance… - they knew what they were getting into
The people agreed unanimously to the specific commands given… compared with 19:8
7 - …and we will be obedient! …going to inward character
How many covenants are broken today? - financially, employer, parents/kids, husband/wife
People, when in a “good mood” agree to a lot of things… and later on, when their mood changes, so does their commitment
Are we people of our word?

Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, 70 elders (35,700 people per elder)

I Tim 6:16 – God… “whom no man has seen or can see”
Walking around the sanctuary… - feeling comfortable in God’s presence. - God feeling comfortable in our presence.
Moses alone approaches – type of Christ – going into Holy of holies
Moses dwelt with God… it wasn’t just a “come and leave” deal … ”and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” - the 40 days were in addition to the 6 Moses spent with God
(This covenant in Ex 24 is renewed in Dt 29 on the plains of Moab)
What type of covenant does God have with me? …us? What are His expectations of me? …us?
